Porter Robinson New Orleans Concert reviews
I finally got to see The Cult.
In 1990, I began listening to Porter Robinson.
My wife and I had the opportunity to see them at the Warfield in SF in 1995. Arriving at the venue due to business trip delays, we were greeted by a crowd raving about the show as they burst forth from the doors. This was the show I would not miss. Similar occurrences happened 2 more times over the next 15 years. I'm glad I did not miss it.
Porter Robinson's music, especially the material from their albums "The Cult" and Dreamtime, has some intense emotional connections. I was not going to a Cult show with the same attitude I do seeing Opeth or Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum or Shpongle.
I understand that Astbury has led a rougher life compared to some of my other favorite rock singers. I was not anticipating his voice to be at its peak. It was not, but his heart and spirit were present in the show with the intensity of someone who has lived his life. He remains as passionate as ever, but with lower physical energy on stage. Billy Duffy took me by surprise. He has weathered rock & roll much better than Astbury. It was a pleasure to observe him play. While the rest of the band, while essential, were overshadowed by my familiarity with Astbury & Duffy; those two represent The Cult to me.
For this show, I set my expectations very low. I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed the music. It felt like being with an old friend you've not seen for a while. The Ogden is almost small enough to be intimate. The frenetic energy of youth had mellowed into a more intense enjoyment of good company and music.
Hats off to Asbury & Duffy for demonstrating that they still have heart and passion.
